THURSDAY’S DISH’IN NUTRITION – “One Little Change Can Make All the Difference”!

Sounds a little simplistic I know, but it just so happens to be TRUE! When it comes to the battle of the bulge, this tip may be just what you've been looking for. A new approach that has the power to 'trip YOUR trigger' so to speak, and set off the most powerful weapon you've ever possessed, among an entire arsenal of destructive devices that you’ve conjured up for fighting this incessant, seemingly never ending war!
What is it? A new approach to losing weight that you've probably never considered before! It's possible that you need not change your ENTIRE way of eating, in the hopes of finally losing the weight that has been haunting you (notice the clever Halloween inference…”haunting”, it is 10/27 right? Sorry, couldn’t help myself… moving on).

Let me explain. When I do a nutrition consultation, I start by literally asking my client a myriad of diverse questions. I do so to try to figure out WHY they’re in the position of needing to lose weight in the first place. It’s important, because creating an “eating plan” is the least of our worries. You see…all calorie reducing eating plans will work, if you stick with them. Our toughest job in nutrition is to figure out what keeps our clients from sticking with sound, nutritionally solid, and fulfilling (meaning; working within low calorie healthy versions of flavor combinations they enjoy) changes in their eating habits that will ultimately create the weight loss they desire. It’s not that the eating plans don’t work, they do. Unless of course you have fallen prey to one of the dozens of shysters out there that would have you believe that you can EAT UP and FILL UP and it’ll all be good. TO that I professionally say, “BULL HONKEY”…yes, another Oklahoma phrase from my dad. Good one don’t ya think? So, now that it’s been qualified…if the eating plan is sound, they work - but in most cases, it’s the “mind set” of the people who are working to stick with these programs that fail. For example, a good friend lost much weight on Jenny Craig. Say what you will about packaged foods, but she was happy and experienced a healthy weight loss and gave all the credit to Jenny Craig. Interestingly enough, in the months prior to her weight loss success, she’d tried three other programs and blamed them all, for not having lost a pound. She hadn’t lost a pound because when those first three programs crossed her path…SHE WASNT READY. Those other programs would have worked just as well as J.Craig; she just wasn’t ready to work them....which later of course she admitted. So, like it or not, all eating plans, Life Style Adjustment Programs, hey call them whatever you want… yes - even “DIETS” (which by the way, these are all just different terms for programs that change one’s eating in such a way as to create a caloric deficit. A scientifically proven necessity in order to lose body fat/ weight)! So, contrary to popular belief, “DIET” is not a dirty word and hold on to your girdles but if you stick to them, “DIETS WORK! YEP…I said it. It’s all about semantics. I’m about getting the weight off, not about playing with words. How bout you? Anyone telling you otherwise is certainly trying to play with your head in order to sell their ‘snake oil’ books. BUT again, hold that thought. That’s for another day. I’m biting my tongue ….for NOW!!!

So what’s this new idea I’m speaking of ? Well, one of the reasons we need to ask so much of our client’s EATING HISTORY, is to find out if their food intake is of the HEALTHY VARIETY? YEP, you can absolutely gain weight by eating too much of a good thing and most of the people who come to me are in this category. They had somewhere previously been misguided into thinking that if what they were eating was “Healthy”, they would lose weight! Not if the calorie count at the end of the day is higher than it should be. TOO many calories consumed of even healthy foods ends in weight gain. SO, if you are eating a diet high in saturated fats, sugars and processed foods; well, we need to talk and then this new weapon will also apply to you.

BUT for those of you who are on the ‘Healthy FOOD Highway” but eating too much of it, Listen to THIS ;

Examine your diet. Find about 330 calories in that you are willing to remove daily. WHY?
Because if you do. That adds up to 10,000 calories per month.
It can be as easy as dropping out the one “Frapachino” that you consume each day, or a double hand full of NUTS that you already had in the morning as well. When you make this simple change without rocking your entire world, you’ll lose a cool 34 pounds a year!!!

SO, it’s not rocket science folks. Take in too many calories, YOU GAIN WEIGHT. Remove some and you will lose.

ANY QUESTIONS?

SO, give it a try. Want to lose even more? Simply add about 30 to 45 minutes of exercise to create an even greater calorie deficit and the pounds will slowly continue to leave you! GOOD NEWS HUH? There are many excellent food plans out there (and yours may already be quite sound). Just remember, they all work if you work them. But always check with a reputable source to make sure they are nutritionally SOUND and well balanced and contain a good combination of complex carbohydrates, lean proteins, plenty of fiber rich fruits and vegetables – but also have a low sugar content!

THEN GIVE IT A WHIRL!

Until tomorrow,
Candace
